A SUBSTANTIAL 1,7duction in run

/A fling costs is c.aimed for an unusual semi-low-1)ading lorry intended to fill the p p between conventional platform vel idles and heavy articulated low-loaders with knock-out rear axles. It has bet n produced and put on the market b Mr. W. D. J. Sparrow, managing dir ector of Streetly Garage, Chester Road Streetly, Staffs.

Known as the St eetly semi-lowloader, the converted lorry can deal with up to 12-ton loa Is, and is based on a Foden twin-steer chassis.

The platform is lo vi and is level to a point behind the rear wheels and then slopes to form part of t ramp. Pivoted to this is a robust tailboard which stands 6 ft. high w: ten raised; and carries at its extrem ity two further ramps. When the rr ain tail ramp is lowered the secondary ramps are pulled out straight to form a relatively slight gradient for a vehicle to climb during loading.

The ramp has four jacks which drop

into position when it is lowered. and fold back again when it. is. raised. In order to provide an even .lesser gradi, ent, a pair of hydraulic. cylinders in the form of jacks is secured to the front of the vehicle chassis, so that the front of the lorry can be lifted simultaneonslY with the lowering Of the ramps..

All the attachmentsare, hydraulically operated, andit•iS stated. that one man can carry out the • wholeoperation, using a simple control panel on the side of the vehicle. A further aid is, a new type of power winch which is operated from the hydraulic pump on the vehicle gearbox and requires no brakes or clutches.
