Hoffmann Steel Balls.

The Hoffmann Manufacturing Co., Ltd., of Chelmsford, wishes it to be known that, although some manufacturers of steel balls have considered it expedient to announce a rise in the price of their productions, there AV ill be no advance in the prices of Hoffmann steel balls. The name " Hoffmann " has come to be regarded as the hall. mark for steel balls, and certainly the company, in its Chelmsford factory, leaves nothing to chance in the matter el their production. The most up-todate machinery and accurate testing and grinding appliances are included in the factory's equipment.

Die-cast Bearings. •

'the Hoyt Metal Co., of Great Britain, Ltd., 26, Billiter Street, E.C., is now offering a very simple form of die casting machine, a sectional drawing of which is reproduced herewith. The device is patented by one Marriorr. A reference to the illustration will show that the melting pot is elevated and heated by a gas ring and through the centre of the pot is a cylinder or sleeve, in which a piston may be moved up or down. The lower end of the sleeve is provided with a stop-cock, and it terminates in a cone which is intended to register in a mutter-sunk running hole in the metal moulds. During the time that metal is actually being forced into the moulds, the two or inure parts of the latter are clamped together between the afore-mentioned cone and a small elevating table. The method of opera tion is I41 piaci.. the component parts the mould on the elevating table, and, by means of the hand wheel and screw, the mould can he raised so that the cone end or the cylinder registers in the counter-slink hole in the upper part of the mould. The piston should then be raised to the limit of its up Ward stroke, and inn! Len metal will then run, through suitable ports, into the lower part ei the cylinder; after the slop-cock has been turned to the • ' on " position, the metal may be forced intu the moulds. In this manner, perfectly homogeneous castings are produced. We have examined many Babbitt and other anti-friction bearings cast ea this machine, and consider them excellent; provided the surface of the mandrel be smooth and free from dust, the resulting castings do not 1 wed any machining or seraping. The moulds or dies for whole or split bearings are not costly to produce, and would quickly pay for their cost in cab and bus garages or repair shops, or for any small works producing moderate euantities of small, white-metal parts.
