This week, we're Taking Stock north of the Border, visiting an Aberdeen Volvo dealer to take a look at a used Daf on its forecourt.

Big engines and big cabs are the key requirements for used truck sales in the north and north-east of Scotland. and T422 AST— a Daf 95XF 430 with a SuperSpace cab and a 12.6-litre engine — certainly fits the bill.

It's been sitting in the yard of Volvo Bus and Truck (Scotland) for a couple of months after it came in as a part-exchange on a new vehicle. but general manager Stewart Lynes reckons this one should be off the forecourt within the next few weeks.

Lynes points out that operators often find it easier to get finance on a new vehicle rather than a three or four-year-old model, which might also contribute to this example's longerthan-expected stay on the forecourt."Older vehicles tend to sell well, though," he points out. "They usually go to people who are just starting out."

He adds that big cabs are popular because of the greater distances which operators from the north of Scotland have to travel. "They have a couple of hundred extra miles to go before they get anywhere," Lynes says.

Trainee salesman Paul Wileman explains that while the truck is still decked out in its previous owner's livery, the dealership is well used to preparing them to the purchaser's requirements."Some people want to buy them as seen, while others want them in their own livery and we're happy to do that," he observes. Used trucks retailed through the group undergo Volvo's 113-point check before being sent out to their new owners, and that carries the bonus of a three-month driveline warranty, although a year-long version is available at extra cost.

Condition The truck had come back from WJ and J Green in Gannouth, Morayshire, in part-ex fora new Volvo. The company, which does a lot of agricultural work hauling grain and other products, is noted for its well turned-out trucks. This four-year-old example has been maintained to the company's usual high standards.

There are a few signs of wear on the outside, where the paintwork has suffered a little from stone chips on the front, while a small spot of corrosion is appearing on the passenger's side. The driver's door has seen some action, with a comer missing and some marks on the bottom, where the paint has been scraped off.

Although it bears some signs of corrosion, the chassis is in generally good condition, while a 600-litre fuel tank will help to re the number of fuel fill-ups on long jouri The Jost sliding fifth wheel looks fine, an truck is also fitted with hydraulics for at as well as a chequer-plate catwalk. All tl have plenty of wear left in them, but the alloys are showing their age.

Inside the cab,its previous owner hard looked after the truck, although the dril seat was showing signs of use, with a spli the stitching on the right-hand side of tF There's a cigarette burn. too.

However, the rest of the cab is in fainl: condition, with both bunks unmarked d at least one no doubt having regular use airsprung passenger's seat also shows Li sign of wear.

Cabin comforts

There are two small holes in the dash fo ing the removal of a telephone kit, and t are a few other marks. The driver was cli smoker, yet there is little residual smell cab. One point worth noting is the lack player — there's only a radio cassette.

Above the windscreen Dafs SuperSi cab lockers provide plenty of space, but has been cut out above the driver to acc modate a CB or other kit. Surprisingly,) discovered when we set off for a road te there's no safety belt.

Round a short circuit,T422 AST pert well. Gear changes were easy enough, b throttle pedal was a little stiff. Brake-wii the truck was fine, but its reasonable pei ance on the road is perhaps a reflection fact that it has been driven very little sin MoT in June.

Overall, this example is a good all-rot and is worth consideration. The only po drawback may be the price tag of £29,5( VAT— that's £2,000 over the CAP Red guideline. At that price, you certainly yr( want to drive a hard bargain when it cor buying this truck.•
