Yuill & Dodds — playing the excess game

Vehicles working n and off landfill sites inevitably take their share of hard knocks, and Y&D's workshops at Hamilton are kept busy on both servicing and running repairs. However, with the rising cost of insuring vehicles against damage, Brian Yuill is looking to take a bigger excess to reduce his premium. "I'm seriously considering talking to our insurance company about it," he reports. "It's currently at £5,000, but it used to be at £2,500. Our insurance has gone up in the past nine years, and we reckon we'd get a reduction if we took a bigger excess of say £6,000-8,000. We've been told that if you can keep claims in a certain band, we'd have a better year."

In fact, since September, following a year of tighter management which induded taking a higher excess, Y&D has enjoyed a £60,000 rebate from its insurers.

Interestingly. Yuill notes that while the company's Public Liability cover has crept up, it's not risen drastically. However, getting cover for less experienced drivers is still a nightmare. "They insist that divers must be at least 25 years old," he says. 1 find a lot of younger people are keen to drive, yet the insurance companies won't allow them. It's a shame, as there are young drivers out there who want to do the work."
