Raw cotton from America, Egypt and India, arriving at Manchester Docks, via the Ship Canal, was the subject of discussion at a sitting of the North Western Licensing Authority, Mr. W. Chamberlain, in Manchester.

S. Cusick, Ltd., Oldham, applied for the addition of two vehicles to its fleet of 18, owing to increased carryings, particularly of raw cotton and yarns froiti and to Ship Canal boats.

In view of the railway opposition, Mr. Chamberlain questioned whether the railway companies could lay claim to this traffic. It was not rail-borne. He required the railways to prove their cotton carryings and deferred his decision pending the production of these figures.

Mr. Henry Bathhouse, who represented the applicant, pointed out that the road vehicles made two journeys a day and the railways could not possibly compete.
