Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

FUEL PROTESTERS are vowing to take to the streets again after the price of fuel broke the 80p/lit mark — the level that triggered nationwide protests in 2000. The rise is caused by the soaring price of crude oil which hit a 13-year-high last week. UK diesel prices followed suit and now

average 81.3p/lit. Further rises are expected in September with the delayed Budget increase in fuel duty of 1.9p/lit. Alan Greene of M&M Greene Transport, who acted as a spokesman for 200 picketing hauliers in 2000, recently led a delegation of operators to Brussels to highlight

the problem. "Enough is enough," he says. "It's time the British people stood up to the government. The UK's transport industry is being squeezed by European competitors who can fill up at home for 37p/lit and come here and take our work. "Our meeting with European

politicians was constructive. They agreed to put pressure on the government to bring our fuel prices in line with the rest of Europe." (CM 6 May).

Road Haulage Association chief executive Roger King has written to the Chancellor asking him to forgo the fuel tax rise.
