Wincanton jobs in East Kilbride are under threat as Kwik Save leaves Scotland. David Harris reports.
MORE THAN 150 driving and warehouse jobs at Wincanton in East Kilbride are under threat after the decision last week to pull Kwik Save supermarkets out of Scotland. Wincanton operates the East
Kilbride centre exclusively for Somerfield, which owns the Kwik Save chain, and plans to shut it following the supermarket's Scottish closure programme announced last week. Wmcanton will continue to man
age the distribution for Somerfield in Scotland, but because there will be fewer shops to serve distribution will be centred on its Pitreavie site and jobs will be lost.
A spokesman for Wincanton says: "We don't know exactly how many redundancies there are likely to be yet.
"We have just started the 90day consultation period and it is possible that some jobs could be transferred to other operation centres in Scotland. We will know more in a few weeks."
Some drivers have already moved once from Pitreavie to East Kilbride so they may be moving back the way they came. Others may move to work on other Wincanton contracts based in Bathgate, Moss End and Livingstone.
"Realistically there will be some redundancies but obviously we want to keep them to a minimum," says the spokesman.
