Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Steel hauliers could be faced with losing business after Corns warned that it will close more plants In the UK, In a statement released as CM went to press (Tuesday), the UK's biggest steelmaker says It needs to stem heavy losses and as a result "there will be further capacity reductions and concentration of operations onto fewer sites".

This could mean the closure of one of its plants in Teesside. Scunthorpe or Port Talbot.

A spokesman for Carus says: "It is too early to say what action will be taken as any decisions yet to be made will have to go before the board. It premature to make assumptions about the effect this could have on the haulage industry."

But Road Haulage Association northern regional director Geoff Dunning says that, since British Steel merged with the Dutch company Hoogvens in 1999 to form Gurus, there has been a reduction in steel movement within the haulage industry (CM 22-29 Feb. 2001).

"This will again affect some of our members. We will have to wait and see where the closures are before assessing its full impact," adds Dunning.
