75 years ago: 13 March 1928

Viscount Peel announced that 1250,000 was being set aside to assist highway authorities in bridge reconstruction. He said the scheme would continue until all bridges throughout the UK were in a fit state to carry increasing traffic levels. He added that the government would not build new roads quickly; it needed to consider the different forms of transport that were being developed first.

50 years ago: 13 March 1953

The Lord Mayor of London paid tribute to the work done by members of the road haulage industry in helping resolve problems caused by recent floods across the South-East. Speaking at the Road Haulage Association's annual dinner. Sir Rupert de la Bere praised drivers, saying this showed that men still came forward in times of trouble, as in days gone by.

The Freight Transport Association campaigned for the speed limit for trucks on dual carriageways to be upped to 50mph.
