• The Drivers Action Movement has slammed transport minister John Speller for falling to take action on overnight parking problems.
The criticism comes from DAM secretary Jack Crossfield, who says that despite Speller's promise that conditions would improve, and prices would fail at service areas, nothing has happened.
Grossfield's group produced a report highlighting the problems of overnight HGV parking In England and Wales, after which a meeting was set up to discuss the situation. However, despite assurances that Speller would arrange a second meeting, nothing has happened, says Crossfleid.
He says he has tried writing and e-mallIng Speller and never received an answer—he finally received a reply after seeking help from his local MP In his response. Speliar says he has "been encouraged by the willingness they [MSA operators] have shown to improve the way MSAs cater for lorry drivers".
But Crossfield says that while Speller's reply says the improvements are happening from January this year, all DAM members have seen is "an overall increase in charges and nothing else".
"When I received the letter I asked him to identify exactly where these changes have taken place, but there has been no reply. It's time Speller took his earmuffs off, listened and took action."
