• Associated British Ports is to provide more warehousing and distribution space for hauliers as part of a drive to exploit its property assets.
The 22-port company says it wants to create more sites like its one at Huntingdon—a 11,600m2 warehouse and 11 acres of land which it rents to Securicor.
Other projects are being considered, says ABP. The plan was outlined in last week's preliminary results for the 1996 calendar year. Traffic through ABP's ports was up 3.3% to 118 million tonnes last year, largely because of an upturn in international trade.
Slaters Transport and Vectis Transport, which are both owned by ABP, helped contribute to the ports and transport sector's 5.1% improvement in turnover to £222.5m.
ABP increased its overall turnover by 5% to 2247.2m and its pre-tax profit by 5.8% to 293.5m.
