Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

IN view of the fact that Republic commercial vehicles have been before the motor industry of this country for a number of years past—users' requirements can be met by Republic Service and Spare Parts Co., Ltd., 20, Peterborough Road, London, S.W.6—it is interesting to learn that-the Republic Motor Truck Co., of Alma, Michigan, has just intro-. duced a complete new range of commercial vehicles which have been expressly designed for work in connection with road building and maintenance. The new vehicles are three in number and consist of Model 88, having a body with -1.? yds. capacity ; Model 58, with a 2 yds. capacity; and Model S-25WB, which is rated as a 3i-tonner.

Each model has been designed to fulfil a definite need, in connection with road work and incorpoilites a number of interesting and exclusive features. The company has always paid attention to the supply of suitable vehicles for roadbuilding work, and its machines of this class are well known to highway engineers and contractors in the United States.

Features of the lightest of the three models include an exceptionally strong frame, large spring shaekles, heavy-duty rear springing, and sturdy transmission and rear axle. In fact, the whole chassis is of robust construction, and the power developed by the engine is sufficient to enable the machine to stand up to severe working conditions for long periods. The wheelbase of this model is 9 ft. 2 ins., and it can be equipped with either a four-cylindered or a six-cylindered engine, no extra cost being involved if the latter type is selected. The chassis is shod with 30-in. by 5-in, pneumatics on the front wheels and twin tyres of the same size on those at the rear. The rear springitig system includes a heavy transverse platform-type spring, which is considered by the company's engineers to be ideally adapted for use on gravity tipping lorries.

Model 58 is also a short-wheelbase chassis and carries a 2-yd. tipping body, which is operated by a power hoist. The heavy frame is well braced and is tapered over the rear axle in order to obtain the important advantage of low frame height without reducing the axle clearance. A feature of this model is the bevel-driven rear axle, the gears having wide faces so as to ensure 'long life and efficiency under severe conditions of operation. In this case, too, a f our cylindered or six-cylindered engine is available.

For the severest class of road-maintenance work—that concerned with scraping, grading, snow removal, or such tasks—the model S-25WB is particularly recommended. The engine has been specially designed for commercial service and is claimed to be an economical and efficient unit. Forcefeed lubrication is employed and an air cleaner figures amongst the equipment. The well-known Republic herringbone gear is used in the double-reduction rear axle.
