by CM reporter HAULIERS throughout Britain are preparing to provide extra transport if the National Union of Railwaymen goes ahead with its threatened nationwide strike from June 23. Although no formal meetings have been held at Road Haulage Association headquarters on the matter I understand that operators around the country have indicated that they have
sufficient spare capacity to cope with heavier traffic. Many have vehicles and drivers standing idle.
Should the strike materialise it could prove a long one. In such circumstances the government could take steps by way of emergency powers to ease operators' licensing requirements but a DoE spokesman said this week that no such plans had been made.
