MANY local authorities are revolting against calls for increased subsidies by the subsidiaries of the National Bus Company. Councils are in general prepared only to spend a fraction of the money necessary to maintain services at their present level without the NBC incurring huge losses.
In Selby the district council has allocated only £500 against the NBC's original demand for £851,000. This was, however, reduced to £431000 following the recent fare increases. Now, after fresh negotiations wi the county, they have cut the request to £310,000, but ha' warned that cuts in son services will be necessary.
In St Albans a row has al: blown up between the ci council and London Count Bus Services, the local ope ator. At a council meeting la week it was stated that ti council should not pay su sidies for routes when ti scheduled service buses d not run anyway.
