Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Container overhang

A RECENT prosecution has brought to light the need for displaying an approved end marker board if a container projects more than 6ft beyond the rearmost point of a vehicle. If the container projects between 3ft 6in. and 6ft from the rearmost point it must be clearly marked. A container projecting beyond 10ft requires an end and side marker boards; an attendant must be carried and notice given to the police.

Wine shipments

IT has been pointed out to me that arrangements for the recent wine shipment from France for Gilbeys of Harlow in tank containers ICM May 301 were made by Transcontainer Express, the container division of J. Spurling Ltd., of London, in conjunction with Sud-Ouest Containers of Bordeaux.

In addition to this speciality traffic, over 1,000 ISO dry cargo containers are operated in conjunction with Compagnie Nouvelle de Cadres, Paris, on a door-to-door service between the UK, France, Belgium and Holland.

Executive's promotion

THE vice-president of Integrated Container Service Inc„ in London, Mr. James P. Thrasher, has been named executive vice-president of the American company. The promotion, which takes effect on July 15, will mean Mr. Thrasher transferring to the New York main office. He has been vice-president in England since 1967 and has been responsible for the successful development of sales, operations, pooling and the depot systems throughout Europe and the UK.

Airfreight news

A MAJOR STEP forward is to be taken in the field of airfreight to encourage the use of containerization

The United States airlines are about to launch a pilot programme to provide shippers with one-way container leasing. Its primary object will be to eliminate objection to the necessity for assuming the costs for the return of empty containers. It has been found that shippers generally are only interested in one-way movement of cargo and this has been a major deterrent to the growth of air containerization.

The pilot programme will run for nine months and, in addition to its main object of developing more container traffic, will serve as a market study on the demand for one-way container rentals and will provide more information on the operation of container pools.

The containers to be used will be the standard D type, the smallest currently used by the airlines and found to be the most popular.

US-Israel enterprise A WHOLLY-OWNED subsidiary of Tr-Wall Containers Inc., of New York, has been formed in Tel Aviv. The new company, Tr-Wall Containers (Israel) Ltd., is a further extension of the parent company's entry into the international market. It already has affiliates in England and Holland. Although headquarters of the new Israel company are in Tel Aviv, a fabrication plant has been leased in Natanya.

Mr. Michael Cohen is manager of the Israel enterprise. THE Orbital hydrostatic steering system of Danfoss (London) Ltd.. is being used by Lancer Boss on its MK III range of lift trucks to facilitate turning in minimum gangways. This greater manoeuvrability enables 30 ton 40ft containers to be handled in 15ft gangways and gives the trucks a turning circle of only 33ft.

Hamburg exhibition

HAMBURG'S second Container and Combined Transport Exhibition, to be held from October 21-26, could afford a valuable opportunity for British manufacturers and distributors of containers and associated equipment and services to display their products and facilities at one of the most important traffic centres in Europe.

German exhibitors monopolized the first exhibition held in October 1968 but the organizers have this year invited exhibitors from the UK and other countries to provide more of an international flavour.

A conference, to be addressed by speakers on many facets of container usage. will be held in the exhibition grounds and demonstrations of handling and storage techniques will take place in the grounds and in the Port of Hamburg.

Many potential buyers from all over Europe and elsewhere are expected to be attracted.
