by Carolyn Hyams • Everything seemed improved this year at the Newcastle under Lyme LDoY round on Sunday, the driving, the marshalling and particularly the weather—it was a gloriously sunny day which made even losing not unpleasant, Continuing last year's experiment of running the heavies through first, the organizers had the 112 competitors through by 4.15 pm with a 1+-hour lunch stop. A number of drivers told me the marshalling at assembly and parking afterwards—each vehicle was escorted individually by one of four scooter riders to a park away from the test area—was much improved.

However, authorization for IR, Norman (A. C. Hutton Ltd.) to go through in a colleague's vehicle, because his had broken down, was given without reference to the committee and caused the Class G results, posted at noon, to be withdrawn until the end, Mr. Norman being the last man to do the tests. This driver together with another from Eli) was last around the road route and they were stopped by an unauthorized pedestrian and re-routed —a sticky one for the stewards to sort out.

Class H results were posted before 11 a.m., announcing that R. Warren (Adams Butter Ltd.) would be going back to Bramcote again this year.

There was fierce competition in Clas with the Howard Tenens Transport Ltd. group making a clean sweep. B. O'Mahoney had the best score of the day with 43 and two tied for second place with 69 points, the road route mark deciding the placings. I understand that the group may go to the Oxford round next year —the challenge will be strong, 30 of them competed this time. Two of its competitors drove 49ft Guy/Carrimore tri-deck car transporters and revived the controversy of whether extra length should not be given in tests 2 and 3 for these maximum length vehicles.

Newcastle does not name an overall champion but awards two team prizes (one for the best local team), both being won this year by Quickfit and Quartz Ltd.
