Descriptions of the Jones 6-ton Crane, Weatherill Shovel, Angel Mighty Midget Tractor and Nash Skip Truck on View at the Mechanical Handling Exhibition

AMONG the new exhibits at the Mechanical Handling Exhibition at Olympia which were not mentioned in last week's issue, are the Jones KL66 6-ton mobile crane, the Weatherill 2H mechanical shovel, the Angel Mighty Midget tractor and the Nash three-wheeled skip truck.

Special features of the Jones KL66, distributed in Britain by George Cohen Sons and Co., Ltd., Wood Lane, London, W.12, are that all four wheels are driven through a special differential and steering is automatically, corrected whatever the position of the superstructure, that each gear motion has been built as a separate unit for easy maintenance and that smooth slewing Iction which avoids high load concentration on the roller path is provided.

An oil engine, provides power, and operating speeds are as follows: hoisting with full load, 40 ft. per minute; stewing with full load, 2-1 revolutions per minute; derricking, full radius is 20 seconds; travelling, 3 m.p.h. with full load in medium gear (crawler chassis, 1.8 m.p.h.).

The standard jib is 20 ft. long and alternative lengths of 25 ft., 30 ft., 40 ft.,, 50 ft. and 60 ft. are available. With the standard fitting, the crane weighs about 13f tons and there is a maximum ground pressure of 9.7 tons on any one wheel with full load.

Hydraulic Movement

All movements of the Weatherill shovel, made by F. E. Weatherill, Ltd., Union Row, London, N.17, are operated by a high-pressure oil system worked from a pump mounted direct to the crankshaft at the front of the engine. Rams are suitably anchored to absorb angular loading and are fitted ' with dust excluders.

Actuation of the side arms and scoop is controlled by finger-tip levers in the cab. The arms can be raised from the ground to tipping height in 6-7 seconds and returned in 4-5 seconds. The lifting capacity is 1 ton. The scoop clears the front wheels, which ensures that materials are not crushed. The machine is only 7 ft. high, yet can discharge at 11 ft. high_ The Mighty Midget tractor, produced by the Angel Truck Co., Ltd., 215-219. Albion Road, London, N.16, is powered by a. J.A.P. 3 h.p. petrol engine and can tow a trailer laden to 15 cwt. at walking pace. It is a three-wheeled al6 machine comprising two main parts, a unit containing the engine, controls and driving wheel, and a triangular swannecked chassis with two wheels at the back.

Good cross-country capabilities are afforded by the Nash skip truck by virtue of the type of transmission system evolved by the manufacturer, H. R. Nash, Ltd., London Road, Dorking. Normally, Only one of the two rear wheels is driven, but when rough terrain has to be negotiated, power can be transmitted to the other by the depression of a clutch pedal. With both wheels engaged, there is no differential action.

The truck is powered by a B.S.A. 420 c.c. engine and the hopper, which is 2 ft. 10 ins, high from the ground, can be placed conveniently below the mouth of the concrete mixer. On another of its models, The company has fitted an attachment to which an angledozer or bulldozer blade can be fixed, or alternatively two forks which can be raised by means of a hand lever for carrying articles such as sacks.

As was intimated in last week's issue, Coventry Climax Engines, Ltd., Widdrington Road Works, Coventry, displays its new 10,000-lb. fork-lift truck. The exhibit is similar to types made for the London Brick Co., Ltd. It provides a lift of 4 ft. 2 ins, and is 11 ft. 8 ins, long andb ft. 3 ins. wide. The turning radius is 12 ft. Power is provided by the maker's own fourcylindered oil engine which gives 30 b.h.p. at 2,000 r.p.m. Steering is power assisted.

Hinged Jib

F. Taylor and Sons (Manchester), Ltd., Bolton Road, Salford, 6, exhibits its Mark III Jumbo mobile crane which affords a wide range of movement because of its hinged jib. On the stand of Strachan and Henshaw, Ltd., Victoria Works, St. Philip's, Bristol, particulars can be obtained of the company's Flush Decker. This is an elevating platform for fitting in loading bays. Lorries may be driven on to it and raised so that their decks come level with the bank.

Among many appliances exhibited which may be used to speed the loading of vehicles is the recently introduced Sholderils automatic hydraulic loader.

It is made by A. I. Mackaness, Ltd., Billing, Northampton, and costs £96 10s. with hoses and fittings. The devise fits on the back of a vehicle and can raise a 3-cwt. sack from the ground to a height convenient for a stacker standing on the platform, at the rate of six a minute.

Another useful unit is the Rownson mains-operated sack hoist produced by Rownson, Drew and Clydesdale, Ltd., Maiden Lane, York Way, London, N.7. This is a portable appliance, the ac.

version of which sells at £98. The lifting platform rises from the ground to a suitable height and then returns, the period it may spend at its 'elevated position being determinable by adjustment.

The show closes tomorrow night,
