Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

"

ALMOST anyone can use an electric welding plant for the first time and make some kind of joint—but it is extremely unlikely that he will make a sound weld at the first attempt. . . . The student should, therefore, make himself well acquainted with the . . . subject before taking up his electrode holder and striking his first arc."

We quote from a book on electric arc welding which we can recommend to all who are associated with welding and who desire to make themselves or others more conversant with the practice. It is called " Philips Practical ‘Velding Course," and is published by Philips Industrial, Ltd., Century louse, Shaftesbury Avenue, London, W.C.2. The price is 3s. 6d., or 4s. by post. There can be no disputing that it represents excellent value for money.

Whilst all welding methods arc reviewed, arc welding is the one with which the book specially deals. Six chapters are specifically devoted to this subject. They tackle it from a practical angle, in the main, and cover the welding of mild and alloy steels, cast iron, copper, various bronzes, brass and aluminium. Extremely full information is given.

Other chapters supply the facts which the author considers a welder should know about electrical fundamentals, metallurgy, metallography and arcwelding equipment. In addition, there is a section on costing.Numerous appendices complete the volume.

From cover to cover the book is characterized by a clearness of style that makes every matter studied—practical or theoretical—easy to understand to a degree that is unusual, even in works of the handbook type. Wherever a diagram, drawing or other form of illustration can help in conveying an idea, a suitable picture is included, and these, too, are distinguished by their clarity and simplicity.

In view of the widespread growth of electric welding that is a feature of so many phases of present-day engineering, the need for more expert welders is considerable. This book can materially help in training them, and we understand that it will be supplied at reduced terms to persons requiring 12 copies or more for instructional or similar educational purposes.
