BE Hauliers' operating costs rose by more than twice the rate of inflation during 1999. The Freight Transport Association's Guide to Distribution Costs shows that the total cost of running a 38-tonne artic rose by 5.3% last year the cost of running a 17-tanner rose by 4.3%.
The main factors behind this increase were a 10% rise in diesel costs at the March Budget and steep rises in insurance premiums.
During the same period haulage rates rose by just 2%. According to the FTA study, only 50% of hauliers were able to pass on the last Budget increases to their customers, and only 12% have managed to recoup all the fuel increases introduced by the fuel duty escalator.
