"GO West, Bosch Magneto Co.,

Young Man!" Ltd. Extraordinary

strides have been made by this company, and the present building, in Store Street, is inadequate. Horace Greeley's famous advice to "Go west, young man" is being acted upon, and the move, without being more explicit at the moment, is towards that point of the compass.

Way back, in my salad days, T lived at Stockport for a period. I was most interested, on re

Stockport's visiting that town,

Fire-Engine, to note the progress which has been made. in the streets and the public buildings ; evidently men with the town's interest at heart have found their way into the local council, not men

who toil not neither do they spin" hut the real earnest variety who have a definite purpose in life, and who are not baulked in their plans because there are difficulties in the way. I am tempted into these reflections be

cause I lind that Stockport's latest municipal enterprise is the acquisition of a motor fire-engine; its advent was celebrated by a pretty and interesting ceremony. It was a capital idea, on the part of someone, to christen the new engine by the breaking of a bottle of wine against its body, in the manner hitherto reserved for ocean-going monsters; no wonder the assembled townspeople were enthusiastic. when a silk ribbon, fastened across the " bonnet " of the car, was ceremoni ously severed, and A Pretty the words " I name Ceremony. this engine t h e

Mary Dalziel " were solemnly pronounced by a local lady. Mr. John Morris, on behalf of John Morris and Sons. Ltd., the builders of the motor fire-engine. had previously presented for the interesting ceremony a pair of silver-mounted scissors, and expressed the hope that the new engine would prove worthy of the name it was to bear. I shall not be surprised to find that this example of " christening " a new motor fire-engine is universally followed. Afterwards, a demonstration took place, and this was in every respect satisfactory. The Vietoria Motor Tyre Manufacturing Co.,. Ltd., of Dalston, has increased its facilities for -quick deliveries and it makes a point of the fact that this brand of tire is turned out completely at Dalston.

Excellent pocket-books have reached me, during the festive season, from two concerns and I. Two Useful take this, the first books. chance I have,. to make acknowledgment in these columns. One from the Peter Union Tyre Co., Ltd., is a most useful hook ; it is capable of being refilled, and is calculated to satisfy the most " pernickety." it contains a feature which is very needful in a pocket-book—a calendar for the year following ; how often one wants to dip into the days and dates of the year to come, especially when we get within " measurable distance" of it. The second book is from ,lessop' s steel works, at Sheffield ; it is a daintily-bound volume, and is full of information about steel. Works managers should write for one of these pocket-hooks, as the composition of steel is, to them, and to owners of fleets of vehicles, an absorbing subject.
