• The VI plans to have one mobile Vehicle Examination Unit for each of its 23 areas. Used primarily as support for collision Investigation, they will carry a range of specialist equipment which will also allow them to fulfill roadside check duties. Dell Evans, VI senior vehicle examiner, explains: "This is a mobile workshop, allowing inspectors to gather evidence which the process of recovery can destroy." As well as reflective jackets, cones and first-aid kits, the vans will contain measuring devices and calibrated equipment, electrical and air suzles—even a compressor. There will also be gloves and masks since there is a risk of infection at a crash scene from blood and bodily fluids. Forty-six VI inspectors will go on a 22 day, five-module course. The cost of having them away from their day jobs for a working month is significant enough—yet the VI plans to tram all 400 or so of its inspectors by the end of 2004. The courses, which are under review at the moment, will be run by the VI Itself in conjunction with the Transport Research Laboratory and manufacturers.
