spring brakes in the U.K. Chassis and trailer makers are being contacted and it is reported that interest has been shown in these units, mainly by trailer makers, some of whom are said to have taken trial sets.

" Spring brakes are popular in the U.S., where they are used on all types of heavy vehicles and trailers. They are suitable only for air-pressure operation and consist essentially of an extra actuating unit mounted on the back of a conventional brake chamber. In the case of the Anchor Lok brake, the second unit is a diaphragm-type chamber. The system of operation is that the secondary diaphragm is held off by continuous air pressure front the air-brake reservoir in the case of a chassis, or from the emergency line in the case of a semi-trailer. Normal brake actuation is by the front chamber. but when the supply to the second chamber is exhausted a powerful spring behind the diaphragm applies the brakes, the force being applied from the spring through a member connecting the two diaphragms.

This means that brakes can be applied for parking by cutting off the air supply to the secondary chamber, and there is also the safety feature that if there is no air pressure in a vehicle's system the brakes will be applied.

Various models are offered by Anchor Lok. A complete

unit, including the service brake and spring brake mounted together, can be supplied, or just the spring brake can be purchased for installing on to existing service brake chambers in place of the cover. In both cases there is a range of sizes and the diaphragms in the two parts can be the same size or the parking-brake diaphragm can be one size larger. For example, the smallest model has a 20-sq,-in. service-brake diaphragm with a 24-sq.-in, parking-brake diaphragm, and the next size has the two 24 sq. in. The maximum size is 36 sq. in. for both parts.
