Cars Ltd, Luton, has received an order from the South African Railways for 50 Karrier Bantam tractive units, bringing the total value of recent orders from South Africa for Rootes group commercial vehicles to more than £300,000. South African Railways are taking a total of 160 Karrier Bantam 3-ton tractive units, together with 50 of the larger Gamecock 5-ton tractive units, and a number of Commer I4-seat luxury coaches. The remaining orders include Commer ambulances for Johannesburg municipality, Commer 1500 12-seater buses for Cape Town City Tramways, and Commer 5-ton and 7-8-ton tippers for the Cape Divisional Council.
LARGE ORDER FOR CROFT: Croft Bodybuilding and Engineering Co. Ltd., Glasgow, has received an order worth more than £75,000 for Thames heavy commercial vehicles with specialized Croft bodywork. LEYLAND UNITS FOR CONCRETE AGITATORS: The Special Products divisionof Leyland Motors Ltd. has received an order for 100 sets of engine, gearbox, axle and steering units for Frontomatic mobile concrete agitators manufactured by Robert Hudson (Raletrux) Ltd., Leeds.
MAMMOTH MAJORS FOR BOWLES: F. Bowles and Sons Ltd., of Cardiff, has ordered seven A.E.C. Mammoth Major sixwheelers to be fitted with Ransome and Rapier 6-cu.-yd. concrete mixers.
MORE DOUBLE-DECKERS FOR PORTUGAL: Latest Portuguese city to adopt A.E.C. double-decker buses is Coimbra, which has ordered two Regent V chassis with left-hand drive and 180 b.h.p. 11.3-litre engines. The chassis will be supplied e.k.d. for assembly in Lisbon by U.T.1.C., local A_E.C. distributors.
LEYLAND GROUP VEHICLES FOR NORTHERN IRELAND: T. B. F. Thompson (Belfast) Ltd. has received orders totalling 4125,000 for Leyland Group products. These include nine Leyland Comet 13C.14R tractive units with 0.400 diesel engines for Northern Ireland Trailers Ltd.; six Albion Claymores for Northern Dairies Ltd.; and 36 Scammell 20-ton, tandem-axle, sett trailers for Ferrymasters Ltd.
