Members were also informed tha the Ministry of Transport could no accept the invitation to be represented or the competition's organizing committee but tribute was paid by the Ministry tc the great importance of the competition

Sir Reginald Rootes has been appointed a director of Stanley Motors Ltd., the South African member of the Rootes Group, with Mr. W. G. Rootes his alternate. Mr. M. Keeble has been appointed alternate to Mr. B. G. Rootes, chairman of Stanley Motors Ltd.

Mr, J. WI. Leonard, deputy .chairman and managing director of Carless, Capel and Leonard Ltd. for many years, will become chairman on January 1, following the retirement of Mr. H. R. Leonard from this position. Mr. J. T. Leonard will become managing director and Mr. F. A. Jackman will become deputy chairman and continue as commercial director.

Presentations were made to Mr. J. Calder last week to mark his retirement as Abington depot manager of Road Services (Caledonian) Ltd, Tributes were paid to him at a special function at which congratulations were offered to Mr. A. Callander and Mr. R. M. Love on their recent appointment to the company's board. Among those present was the managing director, Mr. T. Atkin, who recently became managing director of Road Services (Forth) Ltd. also.

Mr. A. W. Pearce has been appointed to the board of the Esso Petroleum Co. Ltd. and will also be general manager, supply and transportation, Mr. H. Knox, North Eastern divisional traffic officer, has been .appointed district manager, South Yorkshire and Lincoln district, British Road Services Ltd. He succeeds the late Mr. George Warrington. Mr. . Knox joined Wordie and Co., Newcastle upon Tyne, in 1924. and in 1933 opened a new depot for the company at , Leeds, which was subsequently taken over by Currie and Co. (Newcastle) Ltd. From 1937. apart from four years' service with the Royal Navy, 'Mr. Knox was assistant manager of John Grocock Ltd.,. Sheffield, until becoming London manager for Currie and Co. (Newcastle) Ltd. and John Grocock Ltd. in 1947. He was appointed district traffic superintendent of the South Yorkshire district of B.R.S. in 1949 and became traffic officer for the North " Eastern division. in January,. 1956.

Mr.. Norman Tattersall has been appointed to the boardof Leyland Motors Ltd. He has been with Leyland all his working life, starting as an apprentice in 1917. After holding a number of prominent positions he became chief engineer in 1952 and was responsible for the design of a range of vehicles which proved most successful in world markets. In 1962, Mr. Tattersall was appointed chief engineer, special products, 'working mainly on military vehicle projects.
