Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

On A licences the N.F.U. has little :omment to make; members have uggested that A-licensed operators hould be allowed greater freedom in '

touting" for business and that too strict in interpretation of normal user can mini]. efficiency, especially by enforcing :mpty running.

It is felt that greater flexibility of A Lnd B licence operation could be ichieved and more encouragement given o the A-licensed operator if British Railvays was no longer allowed to object to icenco applications. Since the common ;arrier obligations have been repealed iidB.R. is free in the matter of freight ;barges and can, moreover, close or open reight facilities and depots at will, while • oad hauliers may only refuse traffic at he risk of jeopardizing the continuance if their licence, it seems illogical to the NI.F.U. that British Railways should coninue to lodge an automatic objection to !very licence application; this causes leJay and frustrates the haulier's Q1NGLE-AXLE and tandem-axle semiI-) trailers incorporating the F suspension announced in The Commercial Motor, October 18, and a number of other improvements are now in production with Crane Fruehauf Trailers (North Walsham) Ltd. The new models replace the S Series semi-trailers and are called the F Series, Fl being the single-axle version and F2 the tandem-axle version.

As well as the new suspension, changes in design include deeper I-section main frame longitudinals—now 18 in.—and full width 1-section cross-members which are threaded through them. Standard length of both the Fl and F2 is 26 ft. with the cross-members at 2-ft. spacings. The length can be varied to order in 1-ft. increments either way, however, and the cross-members can be at different spacings if required.

Width of the standard F2 is 8 ft. and of the standard Fl, 7 ft. 6 in. The plat

forms are of 1•125-in, hardwood and the standard headboard is 2 ft. high. Rubber mudflaps are fitted in place of pressedsteel wings (these are, however, available as an option) and plates oVer the wheels protect the underside of the platform. A winch-type handbrake is employed and all rear light units are mounted on an easily removable bar.
