In opening the exhibition. Mr. G. R. Strauss, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport, declared that the Government intended to make roads both safe and beautiful.

The exhibition, which is open from December 5 to January 11, is designed to show the public what Britain's future highways should be like. A salient feature is a large map of the United Kingdom, showing the present roads and the positions of all level crossings, of which there are more than 100. At present there are only 400 miles of double-track road. The map also indicates the main arterial roads to be built.

Other interesting exhibits are models of fly-over crossings, ideal road layouts, and a novel "peep-show," which emphasizes the confusion caused by a multiplicity of road signs.

Four methods of parking—in tunnels bored into sloping ground, in surface car parks, in underground parks and in overcrowd accommodation—are illustrated, as well as a plan for the provision of trunk roads through towns.

A model shows how sub-arterial roads through towns could be -developed and linked with radial or by-pass roads. All crossings are designed to combine speed with safety, and through-traffic is discouraged from using urban roads.
