['HERE were strong but unconfirmed rumours this week that ton Ellis, managing director of British Leyland Truck and Bus livision, will be leaving the company shortly.

It is believed that Mr Ellis ias been offered and accepted he post of head of sales at the dinistry of Defence.

Contact with British Leyand was almost impossible his week with none of Mr :Ilis's fellow directors availaile for comment. No one knew ds whereabouts but his secreary thought he would "be iack in the office on Friday".

The company's public relaions and press office was amble to comment on the umour "and I cannot say when any of the other directors will be available," said a spokesman.

The present Ministry of Defence head of sales, Sir Lester Suffield, is due to retire in a matter of weeks. But an MoD spokesman was unable to confirm that any approach had been made to Mr Ellis.

Mr Ellis was one of the senior executives at Leyland who came out of the Ryder report unscathed.
