CONTACT SEEBOARD

I have pleasure in commenting on the article (CM July 23) concerning the night rate tariff for electricity causing problems for some operators of electric vehicles in Seeboard's area.

The first point that I would like to make is that Seeboard has not established a new tariff preventing users of battery electric vehicles fully charging their batteries. What we have done is to pass on the benefits of lower priced night units available for the six-hour period 01-30-07.30 hours GMT.

Some industrial users may be less well placed to take advantage of the six-hour night rate, but of course we are pleased to meet and discuss with them the possibility of appropriate terms to meet their particular needs.

The six-hour rate was introduced in our Maximum Demand Tariff in April, 1975, when all customers on that tariff were previously advised by letter of the change which we were proposing and the reasons for it. The underlying reason was the opportunity we are able to offer to customer: to purchase night units over much shorter period when ti' generating costs are much lower.

It will be noted that the present tariff replaced the MI expensive night unit rate whi was available for 10 hours from 21.00-07.00 hours. OA proposals, of course, do not limit the charging of batterie: as the supply is available for the remainder of the 24-houi period at the appropriate day unit rate.

As was also indicated in o letter to consumers in 1975 referred to above, we are pleased to meet and discuss with them the possibility of appropriate terms to meet th particular' needs. So, taking 1 opportunity of using your public forum, if any of our industrial customers should have battery charging problems they are invited to contact me or the local Seeboard district manager. R. E. GLEADOW, General Manager, South Eastern Electricity Board, Hove, Sussex.
