• European fuel giants are expected to be among the bidders for 30 motorway service areas which are being sold by the Government this summer.
Roads Minister John Watts describes the sale as an excellent opportunity for current leaseholders such as Granada and Forte Welcome Break to invest in their future.
But they are likely to face stiff competition from fuel companies hoping to establish a foothold in the UK.
The sale is expected to realise more than £20 million, with Hilton Park on the M6 north of Birmingham commanding the highest price, around E2 million, because of its high traffic volumes.
