Top Speed Governor

x The equipment

e operates by loving the fuel rack when the required maximum peed is reached. The solid state control box, which as just two air and four electrical connections, is easily iounted in a convenient position on the vehicle. By ftering a two-stage facility, where the rack is moved urther a second time if speed exceeds the governed -peed by more than 2 mph.. (as it can on a motorway ecline), the Fidus system has produced fuel savings f between 8 and 30°0 Also, significant reductions in Near and actual failures of the vehicle power train have )een reported By acting only on road speed, the Fidus Governor does not affect power or acceleration in the intermediate gears A single stage Governor is also available, for users who feel that this is better suited to their type of operation operations, with resultant system damage. Using the same basic circuitry as employed in the Top Speed Governor, and using another probe to sense P.T.O. shaft speeds, this practice can be eliminated, with the added advantage that the vehicle cannot be driven away with the P.T.O. still engaged.

The Electronic Speedomet

Operated by electronic impulses from its control unit. the Fidus Speedometer dispenses completely with cable drives and generators. It is highly accurate, and is more reliable than its mechanical counterpart.

The Speedometer is activated by a solid-state electronic control unit. This receives signals from a probe aimed at the propshaft bolt heads, in exactly th same way as in the Top Speed Governor. (In fact, on speed-sensing probe can operate all the Fidus products fitted to a particular vehicle.) The pointer is very stable at constant speed, and the unit is unaffected by electrical interference generated within the vehicle The Speedometer can be calibrated for any vehicle either during manufacture or by the customer, using t Fidus Speedometer Calibration Unit. Operators can now standardise on Fidus Speedometers, so reducin stock levels.

— And Odometer

The Odometer, although a separate unit to the Speedometer, is actuated through the same speedsensing probe and control unit. It can be mounted in any convenient position on the dashboard, or elsewhere if required It is an electro-mechanical unit head, reliability is improved considerably, and the unit is adaptable to many different applications.

— And Automatic Lubrication Controller

This unit, again, is actuated by the Fidus speedsensing probe and control unit. It uses the normal Lubrication pumping unit, and an electropneumatic valve, mounted in close proximity to it.

Every tenth of a mile, the control unit signals the valve, which then actuates the lubrication system. The use of electronic control gives a high degree of reliability to this operation.

The Overspeed Protection Unit

This unit is designed for use on semi-automatic pneumocyclic gearboxes, and its effect is to prevent downward gear changes at excessive road speeds. The electronic control unit operates by preventing the selection of a gear not matched to road speed. For example, if the vehicle is travelling at high speed in 5th gear, and first gear is selected. the gearbox will • 'change down" in the proper sequence, as road speed reduces. If reverse gear is selected at high speed. the unit will keep the gearbox in neutral, until road speed is nearly zero, before actuating the change. After reverse has been actuated. the unit prevents selection of any gear other than first (on a 4-speed box) or either first or second (on a 5-speed box).

Actuation of the mechanism is completely automatic and cannot be "over-ridden by the onver on down changes, but gives him complete freedom for upward changing Operators have reported that on vehicles fitted with the Overspeed Protection Unit, differential life has been doubled, and gearbox "first life" considerably extended

Fork-lift Truck Gearbox Inhibitor

This device is suitable for use in diesel-engined fork lift trucks. It operates on the Transmission system by changing range automatically, and only permitting forward-to-reverse or reverse-to-forward changes, when the truck is either at a safe speed, or at a standstill. Operation is completely automatic, and cannot be "over-ridden' in normal use: tests show that transmission life is considerably extended.

Other Fidus Products

This is, of necessity, Just a brief sample of our range of products. Fidus Controls Limited was conceived, and is being built, on technically brilliant, but brilliantly simple, solutions to the problems of the Transport Industry. As well as the products we have discussed here in some detail, Fidus Controls also manufacture Range-change inhibitors, Exhaust Brake Controllers. Engine shut-down and Exhaust-brake actuators. speed switches, and several exciting new products which are currently under development. All have this in common — they combine the most advanced electronics with mechanical components tried and tested over many years of operation.

Our Credentials

The Fidus Top Speed Governor is an Approved and Optional extra on Volvo (U K ) Limited Trucks. The Electronic Speedometer has, to date, been fitted to over 1,000 vehicles including many Leyland Atlantean buses: we will be happy to list other manufacturers and authorities currently recommending and using our products.
