THE WORLD'S first truck advertisement was written in 1897 describing the world's first "hgv", a four-horsepower Daimler, forerunner of today's Mercedes-Benz diesel truck. In an attempt to convince sceptical farmers of the advantages of owing a horseless wagon, the German copywriter wrote (loose translation): "A Daimler is a good animal. It pulls like an ox as you can imagine. It doesn't feed while in the barn, and drinks only when it works. It thrashes, saws and pumps as well if you lack money, as is often the case. It is not affected by hoof and mouth diseases; it doesn't play dumb trucks on you; it is not throwing you with its horns; it doesn't devour your good corn . .
