Bill Brock takes you round ne stands at the RHA's Tipper Conference held last weekend in Harrogate

EXAMPLES of the recently developed Anthony Carrimore E Series range of displacement rams were on show at the Tipper Exhibition last weekend. They were fitted to a Foden 510, Magirus Deutz 232.D 26.FK and a York tipping semi-trailer. The range extends from 23,000kg (2.95 tons) to 40,000kg (39.37 tons) lifting capacity and are available for front-end, underfloor, three-way and trailer-type installations.

Greater reliability is claimed for the fluid seals incorporating nylon anti-intrusion rings on the surface of the extension tubes. A wiper ring is fitted to prevent dirt or other contaminants entering the assembly giving good protection against dust and stone chippings, often a source of damage to the conventional cup seal. Oil transfer ports built into the tubes cushion the impact as full extension is reached and an increased tube overlap in this position add to the ram's rigidity.

An Anthony Carrimore insuated tipping body fitted to a 30-ton-gvw Foden S10 allows a Potential payload of over 20 :ons, and cubic capacity of 15.3 cum (20cuyd). Aluninium is employed — it is ised both for the 6mm (0.25in) loor and 5mm (0.19in) head)oard and tailgate. One-piece :xtrusions are used for the top ails. The tailgate pivots are ecessed within the corner posts Ind there is no projection above he top rail to tear the covering heet.

The nine-cylinder combined ,ump /power take-off is also lanufactured by Anthony Carmore, as is the recently introuced pneumatic tailgate catch, Mich allows operation without le driver having to leave the ab.

A 24-tons-gross Magirus Deutz 232D 26FK six-wheeler with the latest design of heavyduty steel body said to have a payload potential of just under 15 tons for road work was also at Harrogate. Mild steel is used throughout for this fixed-sided demolition body, which has a full-width cab guard and short side stiffeners. The floor is a sandwich construction using a 25mm (lin) wood core encased in a mild-steel wear plate.

A Seddon Atkinson 200 was shown at 16 tons gross, equipped with an aluminium body with a 6mm (0.25in) thick floor and sides and 3mm (0.125in) bulkhead and tailgate, giving a 7.65cum (10cuyd) capacity.

York is showing two energysaving innovations, the Hobo suspension and Prestoleg. landing gear, The Hobo suspension was designed, developed and is now manufactured by York Trailer. The leading axle of the tandem bogie can be lowered or raised to suit the load condition, thus saving on tyres and fuel. An overload protection valve automatically lowers the leading axle if the rear-axle load exceeds 10 tons. Turnround time can be reduced by the Prestoleg foldback design of landing leg operated by a pair of standard air chambers. To lower or raise takes only a matter of a couple of seconds.

272 different sizes of Neville Charrold's Nevilloy body are available for gross vehicle weights up to 30 tons. Normally an all-welded alloy construction, there are three different material specifications to cater for different types of use.

The one shown was a IPulker model and has a capacity of 23cum (30cuyd) and is mounted on a DAF eightwheeler. The Ultralite body is also made by Neville Charrold and can be seen on a number of stands. It ranges in size from 12cum (16cuyd) to 18cum (23cuyd).

George Neville's wares were to be seen on several exhibition stands.

Outside the hall, the first ribless body built by George Neville was on the Telehoist stand. The body is built in hightensile half-hard aluminium material with 5mm (0.19in) sides and 6mm (0.25in) flc Body length is 6.6mm (2: 10in), width 2.31m (7ft 7 and sides are 1.1m (3ft 7i while Telehoist 47 ST-11 single-ram bottom-lift tippi gear is used. The semi-trai was coupled to a Volvo F7 tri tive unit complete with sleec cab.

A tamdem-tip bulker bu from high-tensile steel throuc, out has a stepped width frc 2.15m (7ft 1in) at the front 2.5m (8ft 4in) rear, giving capacity of 52.5cu (68.8cuyd).

On the Mack stand the was an aluminium grain trail offering 30. 5cum (40cuy capacity and plated for 32 ton A Bison on the British Le land stand had a Samsonli aluminium sand and gray body with a 12.6cu (16.5cuyd) capacity for oper tion at 24 tons gross.

On an 8x4 Magirus Dew chassis, a Samsonlite wa attached by means of twist-lock and tipped by an Edbro ED1 front-end ram. This enables th vehicle to be employed o general haulage, as well as for carrying sand and gravel.

The more interesting of the two Crane Fruehauf tipping semi-trailer exhibits was a prototype intended for customer evaluation. It is a development of the existing CF trailer which is constructed in either aluminium or mild steel.

The changes are in the width, now making maximum use of _ the legal maximum allowed under C & U Regulations. External mounting of the five-stage Edbro ram is said to achieve a lower centre of gravity to improve stability. Several options will be offered when the semi-trailer becomes generally available later this year. These will include donkey engines, load-covering sheets, remotecontrol tailgate, double-action tailgate and barn-door-type tailgates. Body dimensions of 8.5m (27ft 11 in) x 2.28m (7ft 6in) x 1.65m (5ft Sin) give a capacity of 55.7cum (42.6cuyd).

Telehoist took the opportunity to launch its new Telloy body. Using aluminium to specification BS 5454, it has a floor 6.35mm (0.25in) thick and sides 4.76mm (0.19in) thick. The front corner posts are said to be substantial. It uses welded construction methods throughout and incorporates such features as a grain hatch, rope hooks, front-mounted ladder, taildoor clamps and a sheet rack. The body measures 6.7m (22fit) long, 2.3m (7ft 7in) wide and 1..5m (5ft) deep and is equipped with the Telehoist 4MST-152-488 metric displacement ram.

The CH503 Load Lugger is not new but it was the first time it had been seen at Harrogate.

Introduced in 1978, it is designed for 16 tons gvw, but is really an updated CH501 model with a lifting capacity increased by two tons, making a new maximum of 12 tons and suitable for containers up to 12.2cum (16cuyd). A safe offloading time is given of only 21 seconds.

Wilcox had two monocoque semi-trailer units at the show.

Both are 8.8m (29ft) long, 2.3m (7ft 7in) wide but the 30mm (40cuyd) model has 1.5m (5ft) sides and the 38curn (50cuyd) model 1.9m (6ft 3in) sides, but one mounted on Crane Fruehauf DB 8036/ F2M chassis was fitted with Edbro SSD 18 singleram tipping gear. The headboards are continuously welded for maximum strength.

The semi-trailer is an addition to Wilcox's existing range which includes a dual purpose fold-inside body.

Renault Vehicules Industriels was showing the Saviem TP3, an all-wheel-drive vehicle designed to carry payloads of around 1250kg (2cwt). It is powered by a 3.32-litre (202cuin) engine which develops 57kW (76bhp). A transfer box incorporates a step-down ratio for off-road work.

Leyland Vehicles showed its strength in the tipper market with models right through the weight range from the Terrier to the Marathon including the Boxer, Super Mastiff, Clydesdale, Reiver, Bison and Routeman.

Magirus Deutz had a new model on show, the 232D 26FK six-wheeler with a design gvw of 26 tonnes. It uses the Deutz V8 air-cooled diesel engine which develops 153kW (205bhp) driving through a ZF AK6 80 six-speed constant-mesh gearbox to a double-drive twospring rear bogie employing Magirus hub reduction axles incorporating crossand inter-axle diff locks: The chassis/cab weighs about 7tons 4cwt.

Fiat's newest contribution is the Daily, which enters the market place with a gvw of 3.38 tons. Here it had a Tipmaster steel body with electro-hydraulic tipping gear mounted on a 3.2m wheelbase chassis. Disc front brakes are a feature of this model, as is the front torsion-bar suspension. Power comes from a 2.5-litre four-cylinder diesel engine rated at 69bhp.

DAF's FAD 2305 DH 8x4 tipper is built specifically for the UK market. With a standard wheelbase of 5.65m (18.5ft), it has an 8.25-litre (503tuin) turbocharged six-cylinder charge-cooled diesel engine and a nine-speed ZF 55-90 synchromesh gearbox.

The DAF 2255T double-drive bogie has a lockable third differential as standard. The spring arrangement is said to be unique because it locates the outer ends of the axles without the additional help of radius rods. As shown, the chassis was equipped with a Thompson Hydrohoist body and Edbro 5LCL tipping gear.

Complementing the 1617K, 2419K and LK2624 models, Mercedes was showing the 307D, plated for 3.5 tonnes gvw, fitted with a Perkins Tipmaster body and powered by a 2.4-litre diesel. The chassis is reinforced with runners to conform to Mercedes recommended practice. Chassis cab weight is about 1.34 tonnes.

Scania was exhibiting its LT 146 Contractor, derived from the LT 1466x4, for the first time in the UK. Major modifications have been carried out in the construction of the chassis,' which now includes stronger flitches, an extra cross-member and stronger springs.

Even for off-road running, where full advantage may be taken of its design weight of 36 tonnes, the 14.2-litre turbocharged engine offers in excess of 10bhp per tonne, Torque is perhaps more important for site work and is rated at 1,478Nm (1090 lbft) output.

Pride of place of the Dodge exhibits went to the recently introduced Dodge 300-Series C3084 four-axle tandem-drive model plated for operation at 30 tons gvw. This is its final public appearance and it was fitted out here with a bulk grain body from R. Murfitt of Wisbech and Edbro SD 16 tipping gear.

The model has a standard specification of Chrysler's BS16 six-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine. Chrysler 813 eightspeed, range-change overdrive gearbox and single-speed tandem-drive rear bogie. A 60' hydraulic tilt cab is common throughout the 300-Series range.

Two examples of the 16-ton 100-Series Commando were on show, but the smallest in the range is the G08 tipper rated at only 7.5 tonnes gvw. This is powered by a Perkins 6.354 engine, has a five-speed gearbox and single-speed rear axle, A capacity of 7.5cum (9cuycl) is provided by a Samsonlite body from George Neville Ltd.
