• Drivers at Onward Transport Ltd, Whitehill, Stockport, staged a three-day strike last week over a demand for an increase in overnight expenses because of VAT.
The 24 drivers, all members of the United Road Transport Union, posted a 24-hour picket on the main gate of the depot. They were seeking an extra £1 on top of the present £2 allowance for overnight subsistence.
A spokesman for the firm told CM that the drivers decided to return to work after being offered an additional 50p.
