T.RE brighter weather has proved to .I. be a stimulant to the drapery and clothing industry and most manufacturers are now booked up with orders to carry them over until well after Whitsuntide. Retailers of men's wear also are very busy, flannel trousers and tweed jackets being in keen demand. Warehouses are affected by this trade improvement and the number of requests for small quantities to be dispatched immediately is rapidly increasing.

The steel industry in the Midlands and Yorkshire is outstanding in its activity.

Scotland.

There is a marked improvement in the steel trade in Glasgow, and Messrs. Colvilles have numerous orders on hand for steel.

Blairgowrie T.C. has decided to prepare a slum-clearance scheme. The erection of about 1,000 houses is under consideration at Lochee.

According to the Navy estimates, extensions are to be made to the Crombie Naval Ordnance depot, which will be the chief centre for the storage of naval armaments in Scotland. The scheme is to cost £115,000, of which £10,000 is to be spent this year.

Ayr C.C. is to erect a central hospital at RA!winning, to cost £210,000, with several ante-natal clinics (total cost, £5,000) in various other towns. Runfrewshire E.C. is to build three new schools in Paisley.

Plans have been prepared to extend the Church of Scotland Deaconess Hospital, Edinburgh, at a cost of over £30,000. A new maternity hospital, to cost £40,000, is to be built at Foresterhill, Aberdeen. Stirling T.C. is to build 700 houses under the five-year plan.

North-east Coast.

South Shields E.C. is to build a school at a cost .of £46,000, and the R.D.C. is applying for sanction to borrow money for the erection of a number of houses on the Mill Pit site, Shirley Row.

Tynemouth T.C. has accepted the tender of Messrs. W. B. Cooper and Sons, Sans Street South, Sunderland,

for the erection of 210 houses on the•Ridges Estate. Sunderland T.C. has

accepted the tender of J. and T. Parker, Ltd., St. Oswald's House, Sunderland, for the construction of roads and sewers on the Ford Estate, where it is proposed subsequently to erect 800 houses. Yorkshire.

Some Yorkshire mills require four weeks in which to deliver present orders. Sheffield cutlery manufacturers continue to be busy, espeCially those concerned with table knives and scissors. Razor-blade plants are working at full pressure. Outputs of highclass steels have increased considerably.

Sheffield and Chesterfield tube concerns will also benefit from the placing of an order for £1,000.000 worth of tubes. Manufacturers of stampings, pressings and special steel in the abovenamed district have received a large number of orders from motor manufacturers. Numerous orders are in hand from overseas railway companies for axles, tyres and springs.

Bridlington T.C. is recommended to proceed with the erection of a concert hall in Victoria Gardens. estimated to cost £45,000. The Yorkshire (West Riding) Tramways Co., Ltd., proposes to spend £27,000 on bus-garage and office extensions at Belle Isle, Wakefield.

Lancashire and Cheshire.

Machine-tool manufacturers in Manchester are busy and mechanical engineers are experiencing an improvement in trade. Work is to commence within the next few months on the modified Haweswater scheme, which will take about 2i years to complete and will cost £250,000.

Midlands.

Nottingham reports a slight, but general. improvement in the lace trade, which, it is hoped, will be maintained until Whitsuntide. Prospects in the fancy-hosiery trade are bright.

Steady progress is being made in most branches of finished-iron production and ironmasters in South Staffordshire anticipate good business.

The lock trade of Willenhall is brisk. Hollowware manufacturers are fairly active and the outlook is much brighter in the cast-iron hollowware section. The light electrical trade is busy. Birmingham cycle factories are experiencing one of the most active selling seasons that they have known., Two hundred houses are to be built at Bilston.

Wales.

Swansea Corporation is proceeding. with the scheme for a swimming pool, estimated to cost £29,600, and proposes to build additional waterworks in the Brecon Beacons, costing £790,000. The B.B.C. is considering the erection of a relay station in North Wales.

Ireland.

A steady revival of business in the linen factories of Northern Ireland is now definitely promised. The mills are working full time. Donegal Board of Health is to receive a grant for the waterworks scheme.

London and Home Counties.

Plans are being submitted to the London County Council for a town hall at Hammersmith, to cost £200,000. Stepney B.C. proposes to borrow £70,995 for the erection of tenements in Branch Road, Ratcliffe. Medway Hospital, Chatham, is to be extended, at an estimated cost of £38,500. Watford B.C. is considering erecting a town hall, estimated to cost £180,000.

Worthing T.C. has the promise of a gift of £40,000 for a town hall, provided that tenders are obtained for the work by April 27, 1934, and that the work starts within a month of that date. The L.C.C. is recommeuded to sanction a loan of £108,750, required by Hampstead B.C. for West Croft Farm Nursing Scheme. The L.C.C.

proposes erecting • dwellings in Northampton Street, Islington, estimated to cost £28,500, and is recommended to proceed with sections Ga.nd 7 of St. Helier Estate.

Tyers Street area (Lambeth). comprising 238 houses, including 37 shops, has been declared for clearance.

London Docks.
