BIG PLANS TO STABILIZE RATES. "

1 AM certain that, in the course of the next 12 months, possibly less, we shall establish a yardstick, or, at -least, an instrument by which to measure haulage rates all over the country," said Mr. L. J. Rix, a member of the national council of the Road Haulage Association, when speaking at a meeting of operators held under the auspices of the R.H.A., at Huddersfield, last Friday. He stated that the main rates committee of the R.H.A., sitting in London, was now considering certain suggestions which will provide a basis for establishing equitable rates all over the country. The idea was to establish a datum line for fixing the rate at which certain classes of goods should be carried as full loads for any given tonnage over a given distance by vehicles travelling a certain mileage a week. still think we have got to face further legislation," said Mr. Rix. "Before the Road and Rail Traffic Act; 1933, is out of the way we have the new Road Traffic Bill, 1934, before the House of Commons, and this sort of thing will go on, I am afraid, for some years yet." Speaking of the R.H.A.'s link with the British Road Federation, Mr: .Rix said that the latest step in the B.R.F. was the formation of an operators' section, on which the R.H.A. was represented by its president and chairman. Any matter which had a general bearing on road transport, as well as being of direct importance to road transport operators, was passed through the operators' section of the B.R.F. for Government attention. Mr. A. H. Britterwick, chairman of the Leeds sub-area committee of the R.II.A., who presided, appealed to hauliers to organize. Mr. M. C. Vickers, divisional organizer, stated that a Yorkshire Regional Committee of the R.H.A. would shortly be established.
