from Tony Wilding, Frankfurt, Wednesday

• Outwardly, the exhibits at the Frankfurt how which opens tomorrow are little chang

from those at the previous exhibition two ears ago. But underneath there is quite a ifferent story. Extra engine power is the main theme here power that is needed to meet the 1972 requirement in Germany for 8 bhp er ton gross weight. With the current maxi urn at 38 tons this means 304 bhp, but ere is talk of an increase to at least 40 tons soon-,

So while MAN goes to this minimum 304 hp with its bigger bore V8, Daimler-Benz umps to 340 bhp with its V10 (see this page) and Klockner-Humboldt-Deutz plumps for the same figure with a V12 in a redesigned range of air-cooled vee-diesels. And even these engines are over-shadowed by the new Scania turbocharged V8.---350 bhp from 14.2 litres (see page 54), while outside the Show itself, demonstrations of the 375 bhp American Ford turbine truck are creating great interest.

MAN also has a turbocharged version of an existing 10.3-litre six-cylinder diesel—giving 256 bhp as against 215--and Biissing shows that at least some German users are expected to accept blowing, its entry into the power stakes being a 12.3-litre turbocharged six

cylinder giving 310 bhp at 2,200 rpm.

Steyr has a new V8 with 320 bhp but, because of its recent link with Daimler-Benz, Henschel will be using DB's new V10 in models to meet the new rules.

Transmission interest centres round two new ZF synchromesh boxes, the 10speed range-change used in the latest MercedesBenz vehicles and a novel six speed unit incorporating a torque convertor, torque multiplication is given on first and second only, the convertor being locked up when other ratios are engaged (manually).

There is a new Saviem 710 Ibit. synchromesh box, while a Saviem SG2 4-ton-gross van is seen with a Borg Warner 35 automatic transmission. Much attention, too, centres on suspension and chassis layouts at the Show. Full details of these will be published in CM's full, illustrated report next week.
