• The Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners at Hull last week granted an application by Hull Corporation to increase fares. The increases are to start next Sunday.

The 3d fare will be increased to 4c1; 4d or 5d fares will be increased to 6d; 6d or 8d fares will be increased to 9d. The increases will yield an estimated £200,000 a year.

The general manager of the transport department, Mr. W. K. Haigh, told the hearing that the application was submitted with the greatest reluctance but in the past three years a loss of £470,529 on Corporation buses had been borne by the ratepayers. He said the number of passengers was decreasing and a 10-day strike in May 1968 had caused a loss of £35,000. Mr. Haigh noted the economies scheme had reduced mileage by im a year and had achieved a saving of £150,000.
