The HGV Driver's Handbook by David P. Soya, is sponsored by Dodge and published at £2.25 paperback, £4.95 hardback, by Kogan Page Ltd, 120 Pentonville Road, London, Ni 9JN.

THE AUTHOR, David Soye, is a staff member of the Manchester Transport Training Group, and RTITB-registered hgv instructor and an Associate of the Institute of Traffic Administration. So he is ideally placed to keep up to date with what drivers need to know; he has aimed primarily at new drivers. For those who have yet to take their tests, the manoeuvring exercises in the hgv test are detailed.

A special chapter takes the novice step by step through each stage in the art of roping and sheeting, explaining everything in simple detail and easyto-follow illustrations. Major rope joins, spreaders, dolly knots and a multitude of other useful ways in which the rope can be used are also featured.

Lorry sheets are big, bulky and heavy and can often be difficult to handle. This book explains how to fold them and how to cover and protect loads using one, two or even three sheets on the bigger loads. Experienced drivers may be more interested in having at hand the information offered concerning wide loads and long loads and the rules and regulations surrounding waiting, parking, loading and unloading. — J.F.D.
