FOR THE FIRST time since 1971, own account haulage last year carried more goods than the hi-e and reward sector.

Department of Transport statistics just released show that own account haulage moved 758 million tonnes in 1978, while the hire and reward hauliers totalled 736m tonnes. The total tonnage moved by the two sectors went up, reversing the downward trend of the last four years.

When the distance the goods are moved is included however, the figures reveal that the hire and rew, haulier is still performing m tonne-kilometres than his c account brother.
