By the middle of next year Avis hopes to have about 300 Mercedes-Benz 307 chassis with Silverdale bodies available throughout the UK. The controlled temperature units are being supplied by the Westinghouse subsidiary Thermo King which builds in Galway, Eire after moving there from Liege in Belgium.
William Johnston, Avis general manager, told CM this week that the immediate market was in the perishable food and local butchery business but that he saw great potential in both florist and market garden produce.
The Mercedes-Benz 307 with the controlled temperature body will have a carrying capacity of more than one ton. Mr Johnson said that in his experience most controlledtemperature loads in this lighter sector of the market would be high-volume.
Avis plan to have three of the new vehicles available at each of their commercial vehicle depots.
