Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

A challenge may come from Mercedes-Benz in the shape of its updated new Sprinter. Merc is the first van manufacturer to offer Euro-5 across its engine range, using EGR technology with the Sprinter, and it is pushing its environmental credentials with the all-new 2.1-litre engine.

Power and torque are up by an average of 8°/0 and 14% respectively, with ratings of 95hp, 129hp and 163hp.

The revised three-titre V6 produces 190hp and gets a particulate filter as standard. There's also a new six-speed manual, which is claimed to improve fuel economy with a wide ratio spread. It's claimed that the combination of box and engine reduces consumption by up to 15mpg.

Now fitted as standard are adaptive brake Lights, which, like Ford's and VW's, flash under harsh braking manoeuvres, and revised ESP. There's also new seating fabric and an optional universal interface for connecting electronic devices.

Whereas the old engine offering was unrefined and suffered from poor gear spacing, the new line-up is far more dynamic.

This enhances what is possibly the best overall big van on the road, making the Merc, with its product range, build quality, practical cab and residuals an attractive package. The verdict: The Sprinter comes into the parade ring with a strong pedigree and an established market position. The changes to the new model range aren't huge, but you can't doubt the Sprinter's contribution to freight efficiency one most likely to challenge Nissan, we reckon.
