KARRIER MOTORS' line-up consists entirely of new and revised models. Renault's new G170 16tonner slots neatly into the Karrier product range above the most powerful of the in-line engined Dodge Commando G16 models.

Its MIDR 06 02 12 turbocharged and charge-cooled engine was originally developed for the Mack Midliner range. The power output is 126kW (169bhp) net installed at 2,800rpm with a maximum torque of 558Nm (411 lbit) at 1,800rpm.

It shares the G260 tractive unit's sleeper cab and the G260's 11.6-tonne capacity hub reduction drive axle. The standard 6.83 to I ratio gives a geared maximum road speed of 105km/h (65mph) with a gradeability of better than 26 per cent. Three other final drive ratios are also available.

The B6 gearbox — a six-speed synchromesh overdrive unit — is a refinement of the component currently used in Renault's GF151 16-tonner.

Kerb weights start at 5.08 tons (5,169kg) including a full (200 litre) 44ga1 fuel tank and an allowance for the driver. The show exhibit has a wheelbase of 5.75m (18ft 10.4in), the longest of the three listed.

The G170 is to be built at the company's Dunstable plant and will be released for sale on December 5.

An extension of the successful Commando range, the G24 has Hendrickson beam suspension, Eaton drive axles and a Fuller RTO 609 gearbox.

(170bhp) (installed) Perkins V8.540 engine, the G24 is the first British designed and built Dodge three-axle rigid vehicle for six years. But it won't become available until next year.

Karrier is now fitting the Perkins 4.236 four-cylinder diesel engine as the base power unit for all Dodge 50-Series light trucks and panel vans.

In the case of the S46 chassis cab on the stand, installed power output is up from 54kW (73bhp) at 2,800rpm to 59kW (79bhp) but the decoupled viscous fan, now standard with the four cylinder engine, gives an extra two or three bhp.

A REVISED version of BL's Austin Metro is all set to take an even bigger slice of the small van market. Significant improvements include a bigger payload — now at 310kg — and a full length steel floor, extending forward to a strong steel lower bulkhead situated directly behind the seats, which takes a detachable welded mesh upper

section.

Uprated rear Hydragas suspension units and rubber arch type spring assisters are used in conjunction with a stiffened rear subframe to give extra payload capacity.

A gas strut assisted rear tailgate includes push button release for easy operation.

The 310 is available in four versions: standard and L specifications with either 1.0 or 1.3 litre engines. Detailed modifications include a thicker front antiroll bar and revised setting for the brake compensating valve. All models have split-circuit brakes with discs on the front wheels. Instrumentation carries many features inherited from the saloon car range.

Standard features on all the 310 models are two-speed windscreen wipers with flick-wipe facility, trip mileage recorder, brake pad wear indicator, warning lamps for low fluid and brake circuit failure, rear fog lamp and thermostatically controlled electric radiator fan. More refinement is provided with the L versions. The latest 46kW (62bhp) engine has a 9.4 to 1 compression ratio all 1.3 Metro Vans have a maximum geared speed of I53km/h (95mph).

Morris Ital vans and pick-ups are billed as offering "the qualities of comfort and economy demanded by people running smaller businesses". The latest high compression version of the Metro's 1.3-litre engine gives a claimed 10 per cent improvement in fuel economy over its forerunner. Longer service intervals also cut down on running costs.

Inside, the ltal is well insulated against noise and well instrumented with the same facia as car models.

Two models, the 440 and 575, give a choice of payload capacities of 437kg (8.6cwt) and 588kg (11.5cwt) within its 2.26cum (80cuft). The pick-up's body has a 1cum (36cuft) load capacity and tail gate that folds down flush with the load platform, and double-skinned side panels.

WIDER and heavier models have been added to Freight Rover's Sherpa range of vans and chassis cabs (CM, October 29).

The new models — designated 285, 310, and 350 — complement the narrower 2.3 and 2.8 tonne gvw Sherpas. Freight Rover can now offer both wide and narrow versions of its 2.8 tonne vans and chassis cabs. The 350 models have twinned rear wheels.

All heavier petrol-engined Sherpas are fitted with the twolitre series ohc engine. A new Sherpa diesel engine developed from Land Rover's four-cylinder unit is to become available early next year. The new models gearbox is essentially an MGB unit, first "borrowed" by the 110 Land Rover and now modified with slightly altered ratios for Sherpa.

Payloads range from 130kg (26.76cwt) for the short wheelbase 285 model to 1,950kg (38.38cwt) for the swb 350 model.

Vehicles on the stand include a factory-built drop-side highroof van, ad long wheelbase van examples of the 350, while a Sherpa Combi represents the narrower lighter models. FODEN TRUCKS, a division of Paccar UK, is exhibiting a 6x4 tractor unit and a 8x4 rigid.

The company's 5108 eightwheel tipper is the first UK production vehicle to be powered by a 201kW (270bhp) Caterpillar engine.

Other specification details include Fuller RTX 116096 gearbox, Lipe twin-plate clutch, Spicer 1710 heavy-duty propshafts, Rockwell 55)-ID rear bogie, and Foden FF20 rubber suspension. Foden's S10 sleeper cab has Bostrom suspension seats, a full width bunk and an easy clean interior trim.

The 5106 6x4 tractor unit is equipped to provide a high standard of driver comfort. A Cummins NTE 350 engine coupled with a Fuller RTO 11609 ninespeed overdrive gearbox, drives through a 394mm (15.5ini Lipe organic faced clutch to a Rockwell 50100 rear bogie with a diff ratio of 4.11 to 1 giving a pa tial top speed of 11 9kr (74mph).

A new lightweight torsion suspension is designed to prove traction and prolong life, as well as to g iv smoother ride.

An aerodynamically sht high-roof double bunk slee compartment is available fo first time on the S10 range, is trimmed to luxury stand incorporating AM/FM sti system, CB radio, shaver power socket, overnight heater and suspension seats For servicing convenient lamp is fitted under the Ii front grille to illuminate roi check areas, and cab tilting assisted. Access steps, chi grab handles and a ch walkway are also included a fuel heater ensures rel starting in cold conditions.

An airdam, fitted undei polished aluminium f bumper, a vertical chromi haust stack, aluminium wiair tanks and fuel tanks are items of interest on the F vehicles.
