Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

THE INSTALLATION of a dynamic weighbridge at Newhaven on which all commercial vehicles entering the country through the port will be weighed could lead to operators avoiding the Dieppe-Newhaven route home.

But this will only be a temporary situation as similar weighbridges are planned for other ports.

Already, an electronic weighbridge has been installed at Folkestone (CM June 15) but unlike the Newhaven equipment, this does not provide a print out.

The procedure is similar in each case, however, vehicles are driven at about 3 mph over the weigh beam and the axle and gross weights are displayed on electronic equipment connected to the beam.

The next installation will be at Sheerness and this is expected to be in operation by the end of the year. Though similar equipment is planned for other ports no firm schedule of places and dates has yet been fixed. The adaptation of a number of dynamic weighing equipments for roadside checks at strategic points throughout the country depends on trials held at Staines. See News Extra on page 37.
