Scotland's current driving hero, 32-year-old tanker driver Norman Singer, 1971 national champion in the CM-sponsored Lorry Driver of the Year competition, continues to collect honours for his Bramcote driving feat.

Blue Peter, the BBC television children's programme, is to feature lorry-driving in a pre-Christmas presentation (probably December 2) and asked Norman to illustrate his skill for the cameras.

Last week, members of the LDoY committee and admin staff travelled to the Army School of Transport at Bordon, Hampshire, and reconstructed the final run-off tests. Using four vehicles provided by Ford, Norman repeated his drive seemingly undeterred by the antics of the agile television crew filming his progress from every conveivable angle.

Afterwards, Blue Peter personality Peter Purvis emulated the LDoY champion and, although no mean hand at the wheel, his lack of experience was swiftly evident, especially driving the Ford/York artic.

With three children of his own — all avid fans of the programme — Norman is doubly delighted with the appropriate gift he received from his company, Shell & BP (Scotland). His prize — a colour television set.
