Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Stand 91----Seddon Diesel Vehicles Ltd., Oldham, Lancs. Stand 98—Central Motors (Calderbank, Ltd., Calderbank.

CERTAIN to be an attraction at Kelvin Hall and the most important Seddon vehicle there, is the new Seddon 28-4-V8 model which is powered by the Perkins V.8510 engine featured on the stand of Central Motors. The 28-4-V8 is the tractive-unit version of the 16:four described in The Commercial Motor last week and is designed to operate at a gross train weight of 28 tons. Other Seddon

exhibits include two :30 ton g.t.w. tractive units and three versions of the 13:four model introduced last year.

The 16:four in its various versions follows the same general design of the 13:four inthat the chassis design is " clean " and straightforward and the layout of components allows a good deal of standardization between the different wheelbase versions. But only in this respect and in the fact that the same cab is used does the new model resemble the 13:four because the design is new throughout. The V8 engine drives through an ENV five-speed gearbox with synchromesh on the upper four ratios to the 10-ton capacity, spiral-bevel rear axle.

Braking is by a dual-line air-pressure system with double-diaphragm chambers at all wheels. The secondary system is a complete duplication of the main system and Girling wedge-actuated, two leading shoe units are fitted all round. The sizes of the brakes at the front and rear are the same at 15.5 in. by 7 in. and the actuators are direct-mounted to the back plates.

The tractive unit shown by Central Motors has a wheelbase of 9 ft. 3in., other models in the range being 12 ft. 6 in. (tipper), 14 ft. 8 in. and 16 ft. 9in. wheelbase. A second Seddon tractive unit exhibited by Central Motors is a 30-4-6LX, which is plated for 30 tons g.t.w, and has a wheelbase of 9 ft. This has a Gardner 6LX engine and is similar to the 30-4-690, 30-ton tractive unit displayed by Seddon except that the latter chassis has an AEC 690 power unit.

The 13:four model on the Seddon stand is a standard 12 ft. 6 in. wheelbase tipper with a Pennine 8 cu. yd. all-steel body and Edbro tipping gear. The engine is a Perkins 6.354, which is the only unit available in the model. On the Central Motors stand one of the 13:four chassis is an 18-ton-gross tractive unit, whilst the other has a Primrose third-axle conversion which allows it to be operated at the same gross figure. A 24-ft.-long platform body is mounted on the six-wheeler.
