WHAT DO OUR READERS THINK OF EXCLUSIVELY MOTOR ROADS?

[5181] The following extracts; taken from a letter in a contemporary, might prove of interest to your readers :—

"I was easily overtaken by a 3-ton Diesel lorry while cruising at 80 m p h I was told the lorry was capable of 94 m.p.h."

This letter was written in praise of the German motor roads, and perhaps you or some of your readers would express opinions on the following points : — (a) The actual fact as stated; (b) the economic value of transporting 3 tons of merchandise at 80 m.p.h. by lorry; (c) the life of a lorry driven in this manner; (d) the type of driver (and his wages) necessary for this work; (e) whether a straight road, such as figured, is desirable in this country, having regard to the intense fatigue caused by monotony; (1) whether pleasure motoring, i.e., coach tours, would be popular if run on concrete " railways " at 80 m.p.h., as so often visualized. , Expressing my own opinion, as one who drives solely for pleasure, choosing side roads for preference, I can only hope that our countryside may escape such " ideals." S. T. SAUNDERS. St. Albans.
