Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

[5182] Many letters and strong words have passed On the subject of running recorders without any really satisfactory explanation as to their usefulness or otherwise.

We operate 20 vehicles, all fitted with Servis recorders, and I would like to give my opinion after nearly two years of use.

We did not fit recorders to " catch " our drivers, and during the period of use we have had only four occasions on which we have had to confront our drivers with complaints about irregular running. We fitted the recorders to check complaints of detentions in loading and unloading. The usual practice was for the people concerned to make our drivers appear to be in the wrong, and numerous arguments and suspicions arose. These have now been practically eliminated, and if an argument does arise we stand by the disc, and so far it has been a most satisfactory conclusion to what was becoming a difficult problem.

Such things as !' dodging" the clock do not arise, because we have given each man a key to the instrument—we have trusted them and have no regrets, as every man has played the game and not tampered with the instrument, simply because he realizes that the recorder shows that of which he is not ashamed, his day's work in detail. There is also always the possibility of the " detention " argument, when the instrument is his reply.

I do not believe in secretly fitting the recorders to trap drivers; this causes mistrust, discontent and ultimate loss to the business. STEVE EASTMEAD.
