Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ONpage 449 of our issue for last week, we described the new Satires model-6BLD heavy-oil-engined 7-8-ton goods chassis, also the 313NPL-type lowframe 30-seater passenger chassis. These two models are exhibited on the Saurer stand in the form of polished chassis, all their principal features being prominently displayed.

Dealing first with the goods model, the heavy-oil-burning engine has six cylinders of 110 mm. bore and 150 mm, stroke ani it develops 80 b.h.p. at 1,600

r.p.m. Visitors will notice that the cylinder block is cast integrally with the upper half of the crankcase, and they should make a note that casehardened steel sleeves are pressed into

it to form the cylinder bores. The detachable head has steel air chambers, the overhead valves being push-rod operated from a camshaft which runs in oil in the crankcase. Fuel injection is by means of a Bosch pump and nozzles, there being one injector per cylinder. There is, of course, pressure lubrication by means of a gear-type pump, located at the base of the timing case. Unit construction is employed for the engine, clutch case and gearbox, the drive being transmitted through the dry multi-plate clutch and four-speed gearbox by way of a two-piece propeller shaft to the fully floating bevel-geared back axle. A trunnion-type universal joint is incorporated with the bevel pinion, the whole. a the final drive being easily detached as a unit from the case. Prospective buyers will be pleased with the arrangement by which a special overdrive may be fitted at an extra expense of 170, this providing a fifth gear suitable for long stretches on level road. The normal wheelbase is 16 ft, 4 ins., the front track being 6 ft. 1 in.

The new 3BNPL-type chassis resembles the one described above in so far as the engine suspension and trans. mission are concerned, and the wheelbase of this machine is also 16 ft. 4 ins. The six-eylindered petrol engine has a bore of 100 mm. and a stroke of 130 mm. and develops 75 b.h.p. at 1,600 r.p.m. The overdrive can be fitted to this vehicle for £50 extra.

The well-known 6-ton 5AD-type is

also on view as a chassis; then there is another 6BLD-model chassis, complete with a front bar for manteuvring trailers, combined trailer hook and automatic trailer-brake-operating gear. The 17seater coach on view is of the type employed for the Alpine coach services of the Swiss postal authorities, being similar to the 3BNPL model, although having a wheelbase 9 ins, shorter, and a larger engine with a bore and stroke of 110 mm. and 150 mm. The special type of Saurer crankshaft, as used on the oil engine, complete with ball bearings and flywheel, is shown as a separate exhibit.
