/11HE Dover six-cylinder light van is .1_ marketed in this country by Hudson Essex Motors, Ltd., being produced from the same factory as is responsible for the world-famous Hudson and Essex motorcars. It marks the entry of this Important American manufacturing contern into the commercial-chassis market. There are Hudson-Essex distributors in almost every country in the world, and within the past few months news, specifications and samples of the new Dover chassis for 15-cwt. to 1-ton loads have been sent out to them from the factory at Detroit.

In general layout, workmanship and many points of detail design, the new Dover chassis resembles other products of the Hudson Motor Car Co. It has a pressed-steel frame of channel section, which is slightly arched over the driv

lug axle, the main members being parallel in plan. Suspension is of the orthodox semi-elliptic kind, except for the fact that the rear springs are set so that their forward ends are considerably closer together than the rear end& This splayed arrangement is calculated to Prevent, rolling of the chassis when fairly heavily laden.

As for the power unit, this is a sixcylindered side-valve eaghic and, together with the clutch and gearbox, it forms a unit, which is mounted on rubber blocks at four points in the

frame. The bore is 21 ins, and the stroke 41 ins., these dimensions giving a capacity of 2,638 c.c. The three main crankshaft bearings are of slightly different diameters, the middle one having a diameter of 21 ins. The cylinder head is, of course, detachable

and roller-type valve tappets and splitskirt aluminium pistons are employed. The carburetter has a pump-type acceleration device and the induction is exhaust-jacketed, the degree of heat around the pipe being controlled by a valve which is interconnected with the throttle. There is no water pump. Lubrication is by means of a pump on the off side of the crankcase, which forces oil into the timing-gear case. From here it is led to 'the various hearing surfaces by way. of passages. There is a single-plate clutch with cork insets running in oil, and a three-speed gearbox. The wheelbase is 9 ft. 2i ins. and the track 4 ft. 9 ins., the tyres being 30-in. by 5.5-in. pneumatics. A panelled van with expanded metal sides is also to be seen on the Dover stand.
