Cardiff-based BJ Skip Hire has had its licence renewed for two years, with a severe warning, after satisfying South Wales LA John Mervyn Pugh that it has sufficient finance. The LA had considered taking action against the company's licence, in the light of convictions relating to vehicle taxation, in addition to its application for renewal of 20 vehicles and five trailers at a Cardiff public inquiry.
The case had been adjourned from March, when DLA Gerrard Sullivan said that he wanted to see the 1993 accounts at least in draft, and the amount of fines and back duty the company had been ordered to pay.
Director Basil James confirmed that all the fines and back duty had been paid. He said he had been operating for many years and he felt his safety record and vehicle maintenance were second to none. Only one prohibition notice had ever been issued, and the company had a 95% first-time pass rate at annual test. The convictions were the result of "silliness over road fund licences". The company's transport manager had a sudden demand for vehicles and he just sent them out. James assured the LA that the transport manager would be "out of the door immediately" if it happened again.
